Athens is weird in the best way, and this list covers the full spectrum, from a double-barrel cannon that probably never worked to a lake beach where the fishing pier is broken. You could spend your whole day at the free botanical garden or just stare at a tree that legally owns itself; both are valid.

The World of Wonder Playground is walled off specifically so kids cannot escape, and the Welcome Center will teach you about mourning customs. Start here, then go throw rocks in the water.

It’s all two dollars, if that.

Highlights
Lake walks and woods
Beach with picnic grills
Fishing, though pier broken
Boat ramp and parking
Two-dollar entry fee

I paid two dollars to enter Sandy Creek Park, which is probably the best value in Athens if you like lakes, woods, or just sitting near water while a child throws rocks into it. The beach area has picnic grills, so you can burn hot dogs and call it cooking. Fishing is technically an option, though the pier is broken, which adds a certain challenge. The boat ramp and parking are fine. The lake walks are pleasant enough, and the woods offer shade. It is not a hidden anything, just a solid, cheap outdoor option. Bring your own patience. Also, maybe a canoe, since the pier situation is what it is.

Free family-friendly outdoor exploration
Two kids' play areas
Impressive seasonal flower displays
Peaceful walking paths
Winter Wonderlights ticketed event

The State Botanical Garden of Georgia is free, which is remarkable because it is also well-maintained and genuinely pleasant. My favorite part is the seasonal flower displays, which are impressive without being pretentious. There are two kids' play areas, so you can let the small humans exhaust themselves while you wander the walking paths in peace. The paths are quiet and easy, and the whole place feels like a nice escape without leaving town. In winter, they do the WonderWinterlights ticketed event, which costs money but is apparently worth it, since people line up for it. I just go when it is free and call it a win.

Best playground in Athens
Tower slides are shaded
Walled off, one entry
Paved path for scooters
Pack chairs, bring kids

World of Wonder Playground is, without question, the best playground in Athens. I have no data to back that up, but I have visited several, and this one wins. The tower slides are shaded, which matters more than you think in August. The whole thing is walled off with a single entry, so your kids cannot escape, which is the real selling point. There is a paved path for scooters, and the equipment is varied enough to keep children busy for hours. Bring chairs and settle in. You will be there a while. That is not a complaint. It is a warning.

Highlights
A tree that owns itself
Gorgeous houses and cobblestones
Worth the photo stop
Oddly philosophical property law

The Tree That Owns Itself is a tree that owns itself. That is the whole thing. It is a white oak, or some type of oak, and according to local lore, it legally owns itself and the land around it. The philosophy of property law gets weird here, and I appreciate it. The surrounding neighborhood has gorgeous houses and cobblestone streets, so the walk there is worth it. You will take a photo, nod, and move on. It is a fun, quick stop, and it makes for a good story. Just do not expect the tree to hand you a deed. It is a tree.

Highlights
Free parking and entry
Wheelchair-accessible forest boardwalk
Repaved greenway for all
Family friendly education center
Free programs for everyone

Sandy Creek Nature Center is free, which is surprising because it has a wheelchair-accessible forest boardwalk that feels like a real nature experience. The greenway has been repaved, so it is smooth for strollers, wheelchairs, and adults who trip over roots on a regular basis. The education center is family friendly, and they offer free programs for everyone, which is a nice touch. You can walk through the woods, see some turtles, and learn something without spending a dollar. I appreciate that. The boardwalk is short enough for a quick stroll and long enough to feel like you actually went somewhere. It beats going to the mall.

Unique Regency Mourning customs

Music history walking tours

The Historic Athens Welcome Center is where you go when you finally admit you do not know anything about Athens. The guides are knowledgeable and actually seem to enjoy their jobs, which is rare. They offer engaging tours, including music history walking tours, which are worth it if you care about the B-52s or R.E.M. or just want to see old buildings. They also have deep local history expertise, and they will happily tell you about Regency mourning customs, which is morbid and fascinating. If you are a first-time visitor, start here. If you have lived here for years, you will still learn something, which is mildly annoying but true.

Highlights
Well-preserved double-barrel landmark
Bench with street view
Near government buildings
Quick downtown stop
Unique two-barrel design

The Double Barrel Cannon is a quick downtown stop that takes about three minutes. It is a cannon with two barrels, which is exactly as ridiculous as it sounds. It was built during the Civil War and probably did not work well, but it is preserved and on display near the government buildings. There is a bench with a street view, so you can sit and contemplate the folly of military engineering. It is unique, and I like it because it is a piece of history that is also a little bit silly. Go see it. Then go get lunch. You will not need more time than that.

Visit Athens GA is the official tourism office, and it has improved its facilities. The space is safe and spacious, which is nice, and the staff is friendly. They have new protocols in place, and the place is clean, so you can wander in without feeling like you are stepping into a germ factory. It is worth checking out soon if you need maps, brochures, or someone to point you in the right direction. I stopped in once, and they were genuinely helpful without being pushy. That is a rare combination. It is not a tourist attraction in itself, but it is a useful resource. Go when you are planning something. Skip it otherwise.
